Excellent article. I would add that it’s really tough to write for the Developer category of users. They often need to know things at the system level that are not easily documented, but are frequently changed. So I’ve come to rely on documentation generators like TechWriter (www.adivo.com) to keep pace with the “rapid development”.
I’m looking for other suggestions and words of wisdom on developing system documentation for those “hard to herd” software developers.

Since we’re sharing products we like, I’d like to share some documentation generators that I think are great… the TechWriter series of products by Adivo (http://www.adivo.com/).
What makes them different from other generators, is their flexibility to add annotations that don’t get overwritten when documentaiton is “re-generated” from the application/database/service.
I’ve used TechWriter for Databases, TechWriter for XML Schemas, and TechWriter for Web Services.
But I’m open to other suggestions for this kind of generated tech doc…. ??

For screen shots I use SnagIt. MadCap Flare comes with an onboard screen grab system, but I haven’t used it yet.

I’m new to tech writing but Screen Hunter is free and yet allows for all the basic features. No need to spend money on a program (even if it has additional bells and whistles) when the free option gets the job done
